In Case of Emergency

Our club has an excellent safety record and our events are organised by experienced event leaders. however, we are not a business and we do not take responsibility for you or your safety. Many of our leaders are first aid trained and in case of emergency we will do our best to help. We ask that you follow these simple steps to help us make sure that our events are safe for everyone. They will also help you stay safe on your solo adventures.

Mountain safety

  1. Register for the emergency SMS text service to contact mountain rescue in the UK, you can text the word "register" to 999. Follow the instructions in the reply, you should receive a "success" text. If you are registered, you can use the emergency SMS service if you have hearing or speech difficulties, or if you're in an area with poor mobile reception. In an emergency, you can text 999 to contact the emergency services. Your message should include: "Police, Details of the incident, and Your location", and you should stay where you are until the rescue team contacts you.

  2. Install a What3Words app on your phone. What3Words is a great way to communicate your exact location, especially if finding your grid reference is not possible or the mobile reception is poor.

  3. Learn basic map reading skills. Make sure that you have basic skills that will allow you to return to your car safely if you wish to abandon the walk for any reason. Your walk leader will share the route with you before the event. If you are feeling poorly, the event host will do all they can to help you and will wait with you until the symptoms pass or walk with you back to safety.

  4. Tell someone where you're going. Always tell someone (your family, partner, friend) where you are going and what time you are planning to return. This is just an additional safety net that is rarely needed but provides additional peace of mind.

  5. Print out the I.C.E. form and carry it with you in a waterproof pouch. This is especially important if you have a chronic condition or take regular medication. Please tell your host if they need to know anything that may impact on your health or safety of the group. All information is confidential and won't be disclosed to any of the participants. For our more adventurous outings that involve winter skills, scrambling, climbing or caving, we ask all participants to print out the form and carry it with them just in case.
