Some useful information about our walks and rides

General info

Walk grading

We organise different types of events, but we love walking. Our walks are graded based on the distance, total ascent and the type of terrain that the walk covers. You can see our past events here, we also upload the GPX tracks of all our past events to our open OutdoorActive collection. Please check the grading before joining an event, and read the event description.

Easy - sometimes referred to as "bimbles", these are shorter walks (below 8 miles in length) with less than 1,500 feet ascent, on well defined paths and tracks without obstacles.

Easy/moderate - easy walks of 8-10 miles, with less than 2,000 feet ascent but with some narrower paths and some obstacles to tackle (some uneven terrain, wet underfoot etc).

Moderate - most of our walks fall into this category; moderate walks are 10-12 miles in length with 2,000-3,000 feet ascent and usually follow paths rather than tracks, so rough ground and obstacles are more frequent.

Moderate/hard - 12-15 miles in length with considerable ascent, or a moderate walk with a technical aspect (an easy scramble for example, or knowledge of basic winter skills).

Hard - walks over 15 miles in length, or shorter walks but with technical aspects (graded scrambles, advanced winter skills).

Please check the walk description before joining, the organisers will make sure to list all the hazards and give you a good idea of what the walk entails. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, we're here to help!

Ride grading

In spring and summer we like to organise bike rides, ranging from easy rides along the quiet country lanes to medium level gravel rides and challenging mountain bike rides. We also love bikepacking and we organise various events ranging from entry level introduction to bikepacking through to expeditions in Scotland and beyond. You can see our past events here, we also upload the GPX tracks of all our past events to our open OutdoorActive collection.

Easy - usually an evening or an afternoon rides of 10-15 miles with less than 1,000 feet ascent, suitable for all types of bikes, on quiet roads and disused railway tracks without obstacles.

Easy/moderate - easy rides of 15-20 miles, with less than 1,000 feet ascent on well defined tracks but with some narrower paths and more rough terrain, suitable for hybrid, gravel and mountain bikes.

Moderate - most of our rides fall into this category; moderate rides are suitable for hybrid, gravel and mountain bikes and are 15-30 miles in length with 1,500-3,000 feet ascent and usually follow bridleways and tracks, with some sections of rough terrain.

Moderate/hard - 20-35 miles in length with considerable ascent or a technical aspect (a technical downhill, a bike park track, or a section of hike-a-bike), these rides are usually only suitable for mountain and  gravel bikes.

Hard - hard rides are either over 35 miles in length with a considerable ascent, or involve riding with a loaded bike in rough terrain (as part of a bikepacking expedition), these rides are suitable for mountain bikes and experienced gravel bikers.

Please check the ride description before joining, the organisers will make sure to list all the hazards and give you a good idea of what the ride entails. We may have some spare gear to loan so please do not hesitate to contact us, we're here to help!

Event cancellation

Our walks and events are weather dependent. We will do our best to find an alternative, but sometimes when it is blowing a hooly and the biblical rain lashes down the windows and turns roads into rivers, it is best to just snuggle down in your armchair with a cup of cocoa.

We do not issue refunds - if you need to cancel your place on a paid event (a weekend away or a trip abroad) your place will be filled by the next person on the waitlist and they will refund you directly. Please bear in mind that we may not be able to refund you if there is no waitlist.
